| What is a POP3 Mail Box or Account? | POP3 - Post Office Protocol version 3 - is an international standard used to send and retrieve Email from Servers. A POP3 Mail Box or Account is the name given to your master or central Email collection point on the server. Every email address is a POP3 Account, eg, you@my-business-name.co.uk is a POP3.
When a domain name is formally hosted, it is usually capable of having both unlimited eMail Addresses associated with the name, as well us a substantial number of dedicated POP3 Accounts. To clarify this...
- When a domain name is formally hosted, it is provided with a primary username and password. The primary username is actually used as the first or primary POP3 Account. Thus if the username is "someone" and the domain is "my-business-name.co.uk", then the primary POP3 Account will be someone@my-business-name.co.uk.
- The primary POP3 Account will normally accept any name placed in front of the "@" sign, thus email addressed to fred@my-business-name.co.uk or johnsmith@my-business-name.co.uk will be accepted and received by the primary POP3 Account.
- Thus the primary POP3 Account should be regarded as a "catch all" email address, as it will accept any name in front of the "@" sign. This is why the primary POP3 can provide unlimited email addresses because it will accept any name prefix provided it isn't an existing dedicated POP3 name.
- Dedicated POP3 Accounts can be created for specific individuals or departments, which will provide them with their own password-controlled email address which can only be accessed by the address-owner. This enables senior managers, department heads and special departments - eg, accounts, personnel - to have a secure email facility.
- Note that email addressed to a dedicated POP3 Accounts is ignored by the "catch all" primary POP3 Account. For example, if there is a POP3 Account in existence called BRIAN, then email addressed to brian@my-business-name.co.uk will not be retrieved by the primary POP3 Account.
- POP3 Accounts can be accessed from virtually anywhere - subject to being set up correctly and ISP being used - enabling access to email from remote sites and home if required.
Dedicated POP3 Accounts are normally set up on request to your website administrator, webmaster or whoever controls the website hosting facility. |
